A cool breeze greeted Mozart as she pushed her way throught the cat door that led to the yard. It was rare for a kittypet t go out in the winter, most would prefer to stay inside curling up next to the fireplace, like Chopin ; the chubby cat that she loved as a brother, or sleep in the lap of their loving owners, as her sister Bach prefered. Mozart on the other hand, didn't like to stay inside for too long, she hated feeling confined to one place.
That's why she adored the cat door that Mr. Prym had installed last month, it gave her the freedom she had always desired. She loved being outdoors even on the cold days of winter, she enjoyed walking through the snow, feeling her paws sink in the white mounds of cold dirt, and the snokflakes fall delicately on her back like dew drops on her silky fur. She walked slowly, feeling the wind ruffle her fur, she exhaled a cloud of mist feeling thankful for her thick coat that kept her warm despite the low temperatures. She wondered what her neighbor cats must be doing, probably sleeping. When it came to playing and exploring on the ohter side of the fence very few kittypets dared to go. Not even Bach, her own sister had ever placed a paw outside the yard. Chopin said he had, when he was younger, but he also said things were dangerous out there. Dogs running around without a leash and cars flashing by at full speed, it was easy to get lost and hard to survive. That's why rogues and strays are grumpy, he had told her. But she always wondered what it was really like on the outside.
She wondered about the world beyond, what would the sunrise look from a tree rather than through a window? How would the grass feel on the other side, was it reallly greener? How was it like to live..free?
With a graceful pounce she landed soflty at the top of the white wooden fence that separated her yard from the world outside. She had spent so many hours sitting on that fence before, not being able to gain the courage to venture at the other side.
She sat there for a while her eyes insepcting the white tinted realm beyond.
Then, after taking a deep breath, she leaped down, her paws sinking into the freshly fallen snow that to her, felt better that the snow in her yard. She had acted out of impulse, now she was out, on the other side of the fence.
