now let the day just slip away
something was wrong. he could sense it. elderstar's senses were rarely wrong. he felt it beneath his paws, against every twitch of his whiskers. the forest spoke to him, a low, threatening grumble radiating throughout his entire form. the tom's blue eyes lit with a fire, a threatening force pulsating in his ears and body. change would bring the four clans closer than ever before. however, the possibility of alliances being strained became quite real, and elderstar knew better than to question the path his paws were set on.
things had changed, changed so drastically he barely knew what was real and fake anymore. starclan? didn't that go against everything he'd ever known? yet everyone jumped on the bandwagon the minute firescar came into the forest, accepting him like one of their own. while elderstar didn't like isolating other cats and accepted many into his fold, he upheld the natural tradition of keeping blood in blood, not meddling or trespassing on inter-clan affairs, especially regarding mates and kits. everyone knew that the code prevented the warriors of these lands from changing their beliefs and being wary of outsiders, and yet firescar left without so much of a scratch on his shoulder.
he padded to the edge of the forest and looked out at the broad poppy fields separating bogclan and timberclan. elderstar gazed upon the mossy marsh a few foxlengths from where he stood. backing up against a tree, he cautiously marked it, pushing some gravel into the scent he'd left behind. didn't hurt to be a little cautious. as the oldest leader among the clans, he did remember times when the forest operated a different way, when borders weren't so crucial and ties much different. the other cats trusted and looked up to him, but many of the elders who grew up with elderstar had passed on.
flicking his tail gently over his paws, he dipped his head, as if greeting an invisible cat across the border. if lichenstar were available, elderstar wouldn't give up a chance to talk to her, but peering over the sight border would do for now. he wondered how the clan favored without a sustainable supply of fresh water, but moss was valuable during these times, and if he could somehow befriend bogclan, his medicine cats might be able to use their supplies.

so the dark night may watch over you
