Sparrowkit was the first one awake out of his litter of three, as the sky turned a brilliant shade of pinkness that he had no words for. It was dawn. Making sure his dam was still sound asleep, he rolled away from her in a manner he believed to be skillful, making little ‘oof’ noises every time his face smooshed against the ground.
Once he was a sufficient distance away, he began to groom himself, tiny tongue flicking its way across his pelt. When he figured that he was suitably cleaned, he decided he would practice what few hunting skills he had. He had watched some apprentices earlier, and tried very hard to memorize what he was witnessing. He thought for a minute, hard, casting his mind deep into concentration.
Okay, it can’t be that hard, he muttered internally. Stay low, don’t look stupid. He dropped his frame to roughly half a mouse-tail above the ground, tail quivering slightly. He was a kit, so he was close to the ground anyway. He imagined himself stalking a mouse. What a great warrior he would be! An awesome one, an epic guardian of WindClan!
When he took a step forward, however, he trod over his own feet, and stumbled face-first into the ground.
DARN!
He shot up back onto his feet quickly, silently chastising himself horribly, for allowing such a mistake. He looked around in embarrassment, hoping that no cat had been awake to see his failure.
The white and ginger apprentice, huddled on the very entrance of the Apprentice's den. She had been resting for a while, feeling the breeze caress her fur, ruffling the longer locks of her chest and tail. She had closed her eyes for just a second. The soft sound of a cricket, soothing her as a morning lullaby. She was just so tired. She had gone on an 'exploring trip' with her friend Chalkpaw the day before and her pads still ached from all the running they had done.
She couldn't help but yawn, opening her maw as wide as possible fir such a petite cat. She thought about getting up, maybe walking around camp for a while would help her wake up.. but, oh! she was so comfortable. Groaning she pushed herself onto her paws, her eyelids weighed heavily over her eyes and she wished for a second she were an elder so she could sleep all day..better yet! She wished she was a kit, that way she could do as she pleased and still be cuddled and loved. No. At least that was not how her kithood had been. It had been almost the opposite. Miserable.
She started making her way over to the Leader's den, it was stupid but she thought maybe, just maybe, Tallstar would be up for an early training session. She half hoped he wasn't though, she was far too sleepy to function. Then a little squeal caught her attention. She rpicked her ears towatds the source of the noise and thoughtlessly she followed.
In front of her Sparrowkit, one of the newest members of the clan, stood shyly, his little eyes darting from side to side. She wondered if he was lost.. No. He had already been out of the nursery right? Yeah, there was no way he could be lost. Still he looked a little confused or maybe.. ashamed? Had the kit been up to some trouble?
She approached him slowly, and met his eyes with a soft gentle gaze, "Hello, Sparrowkit" she greeted the tiny bundle of fur. She wanted to ask what was wrong, but she remembered it was Tallstar's kit she was talking to. Her mentor's kit. Still she cared more of the kit's well-being than Tallstar's opinion of their little chat. Tallstar was almost father-like to her! She had no reason to be afraid.. silly Almondpaw.. "Is something wrong sweetie?" she mewed, in a motherly tone, one she was not aware of having..
Dismay and surprise overcame Sparrowkit then, as Almondpaw spoke to him, dashing his hopes of going unnoticed. It was with a heavy heart that he gave in to his shame, sitting upon his haunches, shoulders slumping and mouth twisting into a pout. It was rather adorable really but to him it was the picture of defeat. Oh, well. Maybe next time he wouldn't make a fool out of himself.
"I'm fine, miss," he mewled to the apprentice, whom he was not especially familiar with but could tell just by looking at her face she was kindly and sweet, much like his mother when she was in a good mood. He decided on the spot that he liked her, "Just bein' dumb. I'm Sparrowkit, what's your name? You're really pretty!" He threw in the last part for good measure, because this apprentice was a she-cat, and if there was one thing Sparrowkit had learned, it was how to manipulate others with his cuteness. It wasn't out of spite or selfishness, it was merely what all kits learnt to do when they wanted something. Besides, he kind of meant it, too.
He could have sworn he'd caught glimpses of her before, somewhere. But, where? With...someone...with...his...father? With his father! Was this Tallstar's apprentice? Wow! How cool! Suddenly much more excited than he had been (mysteriously forgetting how down he had been a moment ago), he exclaimed, "You know Tallstar, don't you?!"
Almondpaw stared into his eyes, her own hazel eyes reflected into his bright yellow eyes, the same eyes Tallstar had. She wondered how Tallstar might feel about his kits. He would adore them obviously, but she meant how would the former medicine cat feel now that he was allowed to have them. After having been forbidden from the joys of fatherhood, how did he feel with the three bundles of fur that shared his blood, running around camp.
Looking at the little kit made Almondpaw feel a kind of bubbling sensation inside her stomach. Some kind of..was it love? She had never thought of herself as a mother, she'd never thought of having the ability to care for kits. It was too nerve wrecking for her. She didn't want to mess up, or rush into it, making her kits suffer through their kithood as she had. She also never imagined of having someone to share such responsability with. Sure, she was a pretty she-cat, but the thought of having a mate hadn't crossed her mind.
"I'm fine, miss,", he squeaked, sitting down and pouting like a scolded..kit. Aw, he was so adorable, she thought. She hadn't seen him fall but she had heard his alarming call when he had hit the ground. "Just bein' dumb. I'm Sparrowkit, what's your name? You're really pretty!" . Oh, now he had her wrapped around his paw. He was such a bubbly talkative kit! And he had just complmented her..which made him twice as lovely.
"Oh thanks Sparrowkit," She purred giving him a smile, "My name is Almondpaw" she mewed sitting down and curling her tail, over her paws. She purred looking at his big round eyes light up.
"You know Tallstar, don't you?!"
Almondpaw watched him squeal excitedly, a mrrow of laughter escaped her lips when she saw him prick his ears. He looked funny since he had such big pointy ears. "Well, of course, he happens to be my mentor as well of my leader" she mewed flicking an ear back in amusement.
"By the time you're an apprentice, I'll be a warrior already!!" she added, giving him another heart warming smile.
"..who knows maybe I could even be your mentor.." she whispered, feeling a bit excited with the thought of it.. Mentoring the leader's kit..that'd be an honor!
Sparrowkit was quite thoroughly amazed by this point. “He’s your MENTOR?” he might as well have squealed. He hated his voice sometimes. “It’s so cool to meet you! What’s he like?!” Almondpaw. It was an interesting name. Especially considering the fact that Sparrowkit had no idea whatsoever what an almond was. Maybe she’d show him?
“I can’t wait to be an apprentice! Do you really think so?” He suddenly started to speak in a conspiratorial tone, for some odd, kitlike reason wanting no one else to hear but her, “That would be awesome!”
Sparrowkit was beaming. This day was turning out better than he could have imagined. Way better!
“He’s your MENTOR?”, the tiny kitten squealed with his eyes wide open.
The young she-cat gave him a smile and raised her right paw to tap his head playfully, "Yes he is! What do you think about that?“, she mewed in a sing-song voice, the tip of her tail flicking from one side to another. Her hazel eyes fixed on his cute and round kit eyes. "It’s so cool to meet you!", she purred again and with her tail tickled his nose slightly, "Same goes to you Sparrowkit," Almondpaw must've looked funny beside the tiny kitten, she was still small, considering she was only 8 moons old and she was a female, but still the tiny Sparrowkit was merely the size of a small rabbit. His big ears made him look probably a couple of inches taller..
"What’s he like?!” he asked, his eyes filled with curiosity. Almondpaw met his eyes once more, oh, what would she have given to have a father like Tallstar.. He was kind with every cat, just, and his knowledge of herbs and close relationship with starclan made him wise and just a great leader -in her opinion-. He may have not have the same abilities as a warrior, but he was a great mentor, patient and loving. Everything her father was not...
"He's a great mentor, I'm happy to be his apprentice, I really am" she mewed softly givinmg the kit a wink.“I can’t wait to be an apprentice!" She smiled, her whiskers twitching with amusement, "Being an apprentice can be exhausting," she confessed, "But the moment you catch your first prey it'll all be worth it" she promised, remembering her own first time.
Do you really think so?”. Oh he is just too adorable, she still hadn't met the other kit, Cloudkit, but she could swear Sparrowkit was just the cutest kit she'd ever met. "I hope so! I'd be great fun..I could teach you all sorts of things" she purred caressing his nose with the tip of her tail, almost making him sneeze.
“That would be awesome!”
She then crouched into her best stalking position ; hind paws slightly bent, tail raised behing her, not straight but not drooping either, kind of in a 'u' shape. She looked at the kit out of the corner of her eye, "One day I'll be a great hunter," she mewed, then took a slow step towards him as if he was the prey, "Do this for me" she whispered playfully with an inviting smile and a flick of her tail.
