the past
the historyKit: Smokekit was born to Dawnpelt and Rushclaw along with her siblings, Hornetkit, Stormkit, and Morningkit. Smokekit's mother was not very creative when it came to names and so their father had to step in and name them instead. At first Dawnpelt was going to name them all after animals. Their names were going to be Ratkit, Mousekit, Volekit, and Rabbitkit, things that would either be considered prey or pests. Rushclaw did not like this idea and gave them all different and unique names. And of course, Smokekit was originally going to be Ratkit as her mother not only wasn't very creative, but was also not a very good mother. Aside from getting into normal kit trouble, nothing out of the ordinary happened to Smokekit and her siblings.
Apprentice: It was her apprentice ceremony. Smokekit was renamed Smokepaw and paired with a gruff she-cat named Amberflight. The two got along as best as two cats of opposite personalities could. The young apprentice quickly learned how to be warrior, but she often complained about her duties and lessons. Why did she have to wake so early? Why did she have to do something and not some other cat? Blah, blah, blah. In the end several cats cuffed her over the ear for her complaints, but they only got worse, causing a lot of ruffled fur among her Clan. Her brother and sisters tried to reason with Smokepaw, but the she-cat wouldn't stop complaining. In that sense she had taken after her mother.
One day, Smokepaw got some advice from an unlikely source... her mother. Dawnpelt took her daughter aside and asked why she was always complaining and so Smokepaw explained. The older she-cat blinked in surprise when she realized that her first born daughter was almost an exact copy of her except for coloring. Then Dawnpelt explained that Smokepaw should make her own choices and follow her own path and not be some cat that she wasn't. Dawnpelt went on to explain that while she complained it was often because she felt that she could never contribute to the Clan. When her kits were born she did complain, but deep down actually cared for her kits. She wasn't going to name her kits such names as Ratkit or Mousekit. It was just her being tired and drowsy after the hard labor it took to birth the four kits.
In fact. Dawnpelt went on to say that she was proud of her son and daughters and was glad that their father had given them such fine names. With that, Smokepaw watched as her mother was called away for a patrol. The she-cat wandered from the camp to think about what she had been told. Her mother was proud of her? She actually CARED for them? Smokepaw had often wondered why her mother had always seemed so cold towards them, but even then she did not know the answer to that question and vowed to find out why. The she-cat then heard her name being called and looked over to see her mentor, Amberflight, waiting for her at the camp entrance. Young Smokepaw rushed over and they went out with a hunting patrol to gather some prey.
While the two warriors went off in one direction, Smokepaw and another apprentice, Wasppaw, went another. The older tom taunted Smokepaw on her hunting and scared the prey. Finally, the she-cat could take it no longer. She lashed out and sliced Wasppaw's ear before turning and stalking away. Once she was away from the tomcat she managed to catch some prey and take it back to camp where she was set aside and asked why she sliced Wasppaw's ear. Smokepaw explained that while she was hunting he kept talking and not doing anything to help and caused all the prey to scatter in fear. Smokepaw had lashed his ear to make him be quiet and to leave her alone. In the end both Smokepaw and Wasppaw were made to look after the Elders for two reasons. The first was so the two would learn to get along and the second was punishment for their respective misdeeds. Smokepaw's was hurting another Clanmate and Wasppaw's was deliberately scaring away the prey and doing nothing to catch anything.
Luckily, Smokepaw only had to work at it for a moon while Wasppaw had one moon more after Smokepaw.
Warrior/Queen: Smokepaw watched as the leader looked down at her and her siblings and named them Smokewolf, Hornetfang, Stormcloud, and Morningbreeze. Two moons before, Wasppaw had been given his warrior name of Waspear for his good hearing. Smokewolf was proud of her new name and joined her siblings to sit vigil. That night the she-cat pondered how she was going to live her life with her new status. The she-cat kept her eyes open for any sounds of danger when she felt something touch her shoulder. Looking around the she-cat noticed that it was not dawn yet so wondered why she was being distracted from her vigil. Then she saw Waspear. Narrowing her eyes, the she-cat turned away from him moodily.
He begged for her to talk to him and she stead steadfastly shook her head. Waspear kept begging her to talk to him. Finally, the she-cat got sick and tired of the tom badgering her that she stormed over to the leader's den and roughly woke the leader up and jabbed her tail accusingly at Waspear. The poor tomcat had been caught in the act of distracting a warrior from her vigil and the leader angrily sent him to look after the Elders again. Smokewolf didn't like Waspear and didn't understand why he wouldn't leave her alone. This was twice now that he had distracted her during something important. Luckily for him she went to the leader instead of clawing his other ear.
When the sun rose the next morning, Smokewolf pointedly ignored the tom as he went out on patrol. Whispers began circulating around the Clan about Smokewolf and Waspear. At first the she-cat wondered what they could be talking about, but what she didn't realize was that she would soon find out.
Those two are going to be mates. I just know it.
No way! Smokewolf doesn't even LIKE Waspear, let alone be his mate.
No matter where Smokewolf went her Clanmates were divided over whether or not she and Waspear would get together and become mates. The very idea repulsed her and Smokewolf hoped to StarClan that she never would be mates with a mousebrain like Waspear.
Then one day, Smokewolf gave in to Waspear's pestering and heard him out. What he said nearly made her faint. He LIKED her?! This was not good at all. Smokewolf asked the tom as to what possessed him to like her in the first place and he responded that it was her temperament. While he did not like getting his ear slashed he did like how she reacted to his whining ways and stood up for herself. It hit Smokewolf that he had been TESTING her! Smokewolf was outraged. How dare he treat her like an apprentice?!
For a couple of moons Smokewolf tried to ignore the new feelings that awoke in her... ones that she had hoped would be given to one she DID like. Finally, shortly before her 25th moon, Smokewolf gave in and accepted Waspear as her mate.
