Emberfang spat out the rabbit, dropping it cleanly in the freshkill pile. The rabbit was scrawny and looked hungrier than an elder who skipped a meal, but it was food and that's what mattered. Half it's pelt had changed with the leafbare, leaving it a mottled white and brown, which was how Emberfang had spotted it. There was a small bird she'd left out in the snow to fetch as well. She wasn't exactly proud of her kills but they were better than nothing and besides, she'd spent more of the hunt teaching Briarheart than actually hunting.
The medicine cat wasn't bad company. She was kind and enthusiastic and showed a keen appreciation for what Emberfang was teaching. Which put Emberfang in a very good mood. She liked when cats listened to her, liked when she was able to show them how she contributed. Briarheart had learned quickly too and that was nice. She didn't like having to repeat herself. She wondered if the trip was similar to how an training an apprentice would be. She thought maybe when she was older and more respected that she wouldn't mind having one. As long as it didn't talk too much or try to make jokes. Time is precious and training takes work.
Emberfang debated taking a kill for herself. She hadn't eaten yet, but it wasn't sunhigh and she wasn't sure if everyone else in camp had eaten yet. There was the bird she could help herself to later, she supposed. But she was scheduled for a patrol soon and didn't know if she would have time to sit and eat after she retrieved it. She sighed to herself, frowning at the freshkill pile.
