panic gripped him as his world spun madly into a dark hole, clouded by splashes of silver and hot, expelling flames. tallstar, tallstar! his name rung over and over in his ear, haunting him, gripping his mind like the long claws of a sworn enemy. "stop... stop!" he shouted, desperate for the words to dissipate in the darkness. a great evil is coming, tallstar. evil? tallstar looked up into the blackness but saw nothing. "evil? there's no evil in the fo--" a great gust of wind blew him off his paws and tallstar was spent spinning in the nothingness. his stomach churned and he began to feel sick, until he hit the ground with such force it might have broken a bone. evil will merge with evil, the body of a savior sinking in the blood of the aftermath.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, TALLSTAR.
tallstar awoke with an electric jolt, puddles of sweat leaking from his paw pads. the young tom shook his pelt free of the nightmare. it seemed he still had dreams from starclan even as the clan's leader. having not yet received his nine lives, tallstar worried he might have misunderstood their choice.
he stretched and swished his busy, black and red tail. gazing out at the moor, tallstar crossed his paws atop the tallrock. should he make an announcement? or... was this dream meant for him and him alone? the ruddy tom rested his chin on his paws, trying to calm himself from such an omen.
It was a long day in the forest of Windclan. All that was able to be caught was a small stupid scrawny Vole that hung from her jaws as she padded back to camp with anger in every step she had. Coming to the opening of camp a cold breeze welcomed her and her eyes suddenly went right to whoever was on the tall rock. Tallstar. Blinking and standing still she tilted her head a little to see.. was he off in the distance? He seemed to be somewhere else other then here. Taking in a deep breath Darkheart padded down to the tall rock and her eyes met his with the vole still hanging in her mouth. Setting the vole down she licked her dry lips and looked up at her leader and mewed, ''It's all I could catch. It's yours if you would like it. You need your strength to Tallstar.'' She looked back down at the vole and really was unhappy about it. Flattening her hears a bit she whispered, ''I'm sorry..''
the sound of crunching frost roused tallstar from his daze, and his ear swiveled towards the source of the sound. a small, thin, wiry she-cat padded towards him, but he found her strangely familiar. her name... yes, darkheart, the elegant and ginger she-cat who he saw buzzing around the queen's den. no one could catch anything this winter, not even the burrowing rabbits who didn't even twitch an ear. disappointment obviously held his heart hard, but tallstar knew his warriors couldn't be blamed for the lack of food quietly, he stepped off the rock and held his tail at mid-height, leaning down to sniff the sorry excuse for a vole.
instead of insulting her or becoming upset, tallstar dipped down and bit a piece out of the vole, nudging it towards darkheart. "'It's all I could catch. It's yours if you would like it. You need your strength to Tallstar.'' the ruddy tom merely chuckled at his young warrior and sat, tail curled around his paws. "we do not self-delegate who receives what food, darkheart." his green eyes shone with compassion and a deeper understanding than most cats could grasp. "clans must share, for if we possessed what belonged to us, all would go hungry." he noticed darkheart's shameful gaze and stepped closer, licking her shoulder. "apologies are not necessary. starclan's leafbare is here to test us. we must stay strong even in the face of remonstrance."
Blinking and feeling him lick her shoulder made her feel reassured. Darkheart did give a roll of her eyes though. He wasn't out hunting for prey like all the rest were to feed this clan. Looking down at the vole she shook her head and mewed, ''Have the rest. I haven't eaten for a while I'm so use to not having anything in my stomach.'' Still keeping her gaze on the half eaten vole by her leader she didn't want it to freeze and get cold on the snowy ground. Picking it up she placed it on top of her two front paws and mewed, ''I feel this is the hardest leafbares we have had so far. There hasn't been one day where it hasn't stopped snowing. Prey is scarce is are also using their stupid little minds now. You talk about sharing yet I'm not sure who else would be fond of the idea to share their prey. We are all starving and growing ill. Even our medicine cat is running low on herbs.. cats will die.'' Giving a shiver she breathed out and looked around the camp. Quiet, peaceful but tense. She hated walking into a tense camp. Darkheart's stomach growled but she ignored it. It was loud enough for the leader to hear but this warrior shrugged it off. A growling stomach was now plain background noise like a crow calling in the distance.
tallstar gave her a slightly disappointed gaze. had she not heard what he said? he wanted to share the vole, not eat it himself. of course, the rest of the clan questioned his state of mind at times, because no cat in the history of the clans thought like him. medicine cats didn't become leaders. they just didn't. so why was he here? and what of that dream? thought tallstar as a shudder ran down his spine. the vole looked appetizing, but tallstar could survive without food in his belly. "please, darkheart. take the vole. she-cats need their strength more than ever, now." his kind, green eyes were mesmerizing, as if someone cut out little emeralds and stuck them to tallstar. "i appreciate the gesture of good tidings, but i will hunt for the clan later in the evening."
he'd heard things about darkheart. while her loyalty to windclan remained strong, her passion and love for warriorship lacked the backing tallstar needed in his clan. at the same time, he didn't wish for her resignation, for the elder's den was a miserable place for a young warrior. "how is the warrior life for you, darkheart?" tallstar asked. at one point, he thought twilightstar would appoint the she-cat in place of briarheart, but it seemed twilightstar wasn't as aware of windclanners as he. ''I feel this is the hardest leafbares we have had so far. There hasn't been one day where it hasn't stopped snowing. Prey is scarce is are also using their stupid little minds now. You talk about sharing yet I'm not sure who else would be fond of the idea to share their prey. We are all starving and growing ill. Even our medicine cat is running low on herbs.. cats will die.'' cats will die... the haunting nightmare sprang back to life in his mind and tallstar winced, his eyes clenched shut.
he came to a few seconds later, carefully opening his orbs. the rumbling of darkheart's stomach brought him back to the world and tallheart couldn't help but mrow in laughter. "looks like somebody wants a bite to eat." there was no way he was giving up his mission. "come, now. what if you want kits someday? no food now means a harder labor later."
''Being a warrior is very rewarding Tallstar. Warriors get a little bit of respect in their own way. Having apprentices looking up to you, teaching them what you learned in the past and watching them grow. It's rewarding all on its own. No matter what position you have in the clan its work. Everyone has a job in this clan being from being the smallest kit to a wonderful leader such as yourself. It's worth it.'' she mewed with a gentle smile on her face. At this point Darkheart wasn't even focused on how cold she was anymore. Just talking to her leader and hearing his voice alone was warming her up enough. Oh.. he did hear that.. she thought as her ears flattened against her head when her stomach growled. Giving a tiny bit of laughter she nodded to her leaders words and ate a piece of the vole and missed so much how prey tasted. What fi you want kits someday? the words rang in her ears. Giving a smile she mewed, ''Kits eh? Well I would love to have kits someday. Just.. that one tom has to come by and show me he won't leave me or hurt me in order to start a family.'' she mewed. Looking deep into his eyes and blinked softly. As if she could just be herself around her leader. Something just felt right being with him. Darkheart looked up to him so much and would do anything to make him happy. If she had to hunt for moons she would. Her loyalty would always be with Windclan. Nowhere else. ''You said you were going to hunt for the clan later.. would you enjoy some company by any chance? I don't think I'm busy doing anything..'' she mewed giving a little playful smile her eyes shining as bright as the stars in the sky. Darkhearts whole mood instantly changed and everything felt as if it was falling right into place.
It's worth it.'' but was it? tallstar remembered his youth, the excitement he had about fighting rival clans and proving windclan worthy of praise. he used to play with his denmates as all kits do, tacking, biting, scratching, and dominating, so it surprised him when he had an ominous dream about becoming a medicine cat apprentice. there was a calling, a tug on his heart towards the stars, deities he barely knew but wanted to oh so badly. "i was never a warrior." he took a deep breath in and exhaled, feeling his body relax. "i have no experience." maybe he was just talking to himself. the doubtfulness would not leave.
''Kits eh? Well I would love to have kits someday. Just.. that one tom has to come by and show me he won't leave me or hurt me in order to start a family.'' ah, kits. tallstar could never dream of having a family as a medicine cat, but suddenly now the doors were open. should he risk his passion and devotion to starclan at the expense of having a family? the fact that darkheart mentioned 'hurt' intrigued him, and he turned his head, large green eyes locked directly on her. "bad experiences?" he inquired, saying little more. delving deep into cat's lives did not take up much of his time, but he liked being aware.
''You said you were going to hunt for the clan later.. would you enjoy some company by any chance? I don't think I'm busy doing anything..'' honestly, tallstar did not want to hunt or do much of anything, but the clan watched him with judging eyes every time he took a nap or made dirt. begrudgingly, he nodded and turned his head away, avoiding her gaze. "i suppose i can go..." despite his true feelings, tallstar needed to obey the warrior code, and starclan demanded all warriors hunt for the good of the clan.
Darkheart fell silent when the leader told him he was never a warrior. He never had the experience as a warrior. Darkheart just looked at him with a straight face but didn't say anything about it. Darkheart felt terrible. ''So, you just got thrown into leadership.. just like that?'' Her eyes filled with a little hint of sadness but she refused to show all of her pain she felt for him. Why did this bug her so much. Shaking it off mentally she decided to change the subject. ''Even though you didn't have the warrior experience you possibly wanted.. we have a healer as a leader. That's a gift Tallstar. A gift Windclan cant be more thankful for! We have an extra medicine cat if needed. No other clan has that. Granted they also have medicine cats and apprentices to help them heal but we get to have three.'' Giving a soft smile Darkheart looked down and saw the half eaten vole that they had both shared and looked back up at her leader and mewed, ''Hey. What do you say we go hunting the best we can. Both as warriors. Forget you're a leader for just a few moments and come with me and we can hunt just like two regular cats would for the clan.'' With a sparkle in her eye she wanted nothing more then her leader to not worry about anything right now. Prey was hard to find yes, weather was getting colder by the day. Yet, what was wrong with letting loose and having fun for a while. Motioning with her head she turned around and headed to exit the camp with her tail held high along with her head. If it was just one day where she could have her leader remember what it was like to have fun.. today would be the day where it would happen for him.
