he raised his muzzle, dropping his jaw to let the warm scent of the forest lull on his tongue. elkheart let the smell reside there for a moment before gulping it down, laying low and crawling towards a pidgeon pecking on a few seeds near an oak tree. patience, thought elkheart, taking one careful step forward. you don't want to scare it off... during leafbare, any prey meant the clan would eat well, and elkheart didn't need to worry about supplying the cats with food. the first of the frosts blanketed the dirt and leaves, his tough pads no longer possessing the same traction as on dry land. he felt his paw jerk forward, slipping slightly, the ice sqeaking beneath him. clenching his teeth, elkheart hoped his prey hadn't heard the noise, but there was little hope now. the pigeon whirled around, its big eyes meeting elkheart's, and before the bengal could dive after it, it picked itself up and flew into the shadows. crap. elkheart sat, defeated, and licked his paw.
should he go after another catch or abandon the quest altogether? the dilemma was unsettling, and elkheart didn't enjoy being caught unawares. sure, he should be with a group, but it seemed the rest of the clan would rather huddle around and keep each other warm instead of eat. snorting with internal disgust, elkheart stood once more and tried to sniff out another animal.
this time, his prospect was bigger, and more dangerous. a tawny owl was in the area and on the hunt. looking up at the moon overhead, elkheart barely made out the shape of flapping wings, but darted after it. he managed to catch up with it, hiding behind a bracken bush. a mouse humbly sniffed the ground, not knowing it was about to become lunch. elkheart noticed the bird begin to swoop down, and just as the talons met the rodent, elkheart pounced.
he was able to land on the large bird's back, his weight enough to pin it to the ground. the owl struggled, screeching and flapping its wings, but elkheart hung on as best he could. amidst the jerking, twisting, and thrashing, he sunk his jaws into the animals neck and ripped sharply to the right. with a harsh squeak, the owl fell, dead and still. elkheart didn't have time to rejoice over his good luck, because he grabbed both the mouse and the owl in his jaws (as best he could) and began the slow journey back to the ravine.
