The occasional flashes of light from the firefly colony lit up the dark confines of a boat as a large tortoiseshell she-cat paced back and forth anxiously. She sighed. She hated being leader. Lichenstar believed that she was a horrible leader - one that should have never been chosen to become a deputy in the first place. To Lichenstar, she always felt like she was letting her clan down somehow. Every little decision, even something as minuscule as choosing which piece of prey to eat for the day, just felt wrong. Even being in her den felt wrong. She wasn't even sure on what to do anymore.
When she heard that Ivylight had passed away just minutes ago, the leader absconded to the confines of her den from shock. She felt a bit ashamed from her retreat, as it was very unleader-like of her. But she just couldn't believe it. In fact, she refuses to believe it. Ivylight can't be dead. She just can't. Plus how is her deputy going to feel about all of this? Ivylight was her mother after all. She stopped pacing. Lichenstar tried to calm herself down the best she could. This was not a time for her to appear so weak.
The beginnings of Earrach have not been kind to her clan. Cats were constantly dying of dehydration left and right and clan territory is constantly diminishing while all the other clans do nothing as BogClan begins to waste away. And now this. Ivylight, her deputy's mother, was now declared dead. She had fallen gravely ill after falling in cold waters and unfortunately BogClan was unable to provide the necessary herbs for her to fight off the infection. If the other clan would have given us the necessary herbs, this wouldn't have happened.
Lichenstar took a deep breath, and straightened her self out. She squeezed out the entrance of her den and held her head high - refusing to let Ivylight's death get the best of her. The leader leaped up onto the top of the overturned that functioned both as a den and a meeting place for her clan. "May all those who are old enough to catch their own prey gather around for a clan meeting." Her voice was orotund and showed no anxiety. She must do the best for her clan. Lichenstar has to fix this mess somehow and the other clans must pay for destroying her family. She waited patiently as her clan gathered around. Hopefully her deputy would come back soon. She couldn't wait around and delay the vigil any longer.
