Briarheart of WindClan
name , Briarheart
gender , she-cat
age , 36 moons
rank , Medicine Cat
clan , WindClan
short description , Brown tabby she-cat with white chest and paws
appearance ,
No one but Briarheart will ever understand why she chose to follow the path of a medicine cat. She has the potential of being one of the best warriors the forest had ever seen. Her shoulders are thick and broad, an oddity for the usually thin and swift WindClan. Her legs are well-muscled from moons of digging through the earth to get to herbs, but her back legs are especially strong. She's a pretty good jumper, able to get higher in the air to bring down birds on the rare occasion when she's actually hunting.
Aside from that, she looks like an average cat. She has mostly brown fur, with white paws and a white chest. Like her mother, her pelt is medium-length. It's not much help in leaf-bare, but not much of a hindrance in greenleaf either. Her eyes are naturally narrowed and bright amber. When she looks into your eyes, you feel like she knows more about you than you do. It's kind of unnerving, really...[/ul]
personality ,
Positive: Friendly, Cheerful, Wise
Either inspite of or because of her position as medicine cat, Briarheart will make friends with anyone. Since borders don't really exist for medicine cats, that includes loners and kittypets. It doesn't matter to her whether your parents were from her Clan, an enemy Clan, outside of a Clan, or even if you're half-Clan. Your parents don't dictate how you live your life, or at the very least they shouldn't.
It takes a lot to bring Briarheart's mood down. Only when there's a death in the Clan will she be upset. From the moment she wakes up to the moment she goes to sleep, she has a smile on her face. Whether it's strained or whether it's only a small grin, you can always count on Briarheart to bring cheer to a small crowd. She's always happy, and her happiness is contagious when she wants it to be.
Because of her usual cheer and good will, a lot of cats tend to forget that she has walked with StarClan. If caught in the right mood, Briarheart can show wisdom beyond what her age would suggest. She speaks of destiny and fate and the will of StarClan, and that all anyone can really do in the end is pray and hope that everything will be better. She's one of those cats that thinks StarClan controls everything in life: The weather, the blessings, and even the tragedies. StarClan has a destiny planned for every cat, they just need to find it.Negative: Easily distracted, Forgetful, Random
Briarheart usually needs to take someone out with her to collect herbs. Not because she can't defend herself! Oh no, even insinuating that is an insult and you shall be quickly proven wrong. The reason is that, one moment she's looking for borage or juniper berries, and the next she's trying to catch a butterfly or looking for shapes in the clouds. Briarheart is easily distracted. If she sees something from the corner of her eye, she'll follow after it until she finds out what it is.
And after she finds it, Briarheart will forget what she'd been doing. She'll look around where ever she is, blink, and wonder out loud, "What was I doing again?" It's not uncommon for warriors to find batches of herbs in the middle of the territory but no medicine cat. It's caused worry for her safety the first few times, but Briarheart always just laughs it off.
Anyone conversing with Briarheart should be prepared for confusion and headaches. Her thought process jumps around so much that one moment she'll be talking about the weather and next she'll be talking about what kind of shiny thing she'd found on an herb-gathering trip. It makes her sound really random, but it's also kind of amusing to watch.
history,
Before Life
It was amazing to everyone that Gorsewhisker and Rabbitleap could stand each other long enough to have kits. She was spirited and brave; he was skittish and nervous. They weren't friends, but they weren't enemies either. They were just familiar faces to each other. They had kits together only to help the Clan. Rabbitleap was a good cat, though. He stopped in the nursery at least once a day to see how Gorsewhisker was, checking to see if she needed anything. He brought her fresh-kill when she was hungry and water when she was thirsty.
He was with her when the belly pains came. He fetched the medicine cat immediately, who said she was going into labor half a moon early. But everything was going to be okay; it wasn't unknown for queens to give birth this early. There were only minor complications with the birthing process. The first to be born was the biggest, a black and white tomkit that they named Rookkit. Second born was Briarkit, a brown she-kit with a white chest and paws. Lastly to be born was a light-gray she-kit named Ravenkit.Kit
Since Rookkit was both the oldest and the biggest, he had the most sway in what the trio would do. Briarkit was quite happy with this arrangement. She enjoyed the games her only brother came up with. Ravenkit, on the other hand, wanted to be leader. For some reason, she thought she knew better than her older siblings. Whatever decision Rookkit came up with, no matter how much fun it sounded like, Ravenkit would argue with.
Briarkit was often caught in the middle of their debates, and slowly became the mediator between them. She could calm Rookkit's temper with a soothing meow, and make Ravenkit keep her competitive side downplayed with a single look. It was noticed by the medicine cat as well, and soon he was inviting Briarkit into his den to help him with herbs. She was fascinated by all the herbs and knowledge, and asked questions constantly. It was only a moon before they were to be made apprentices when she said she wanted to be a medicine cat. Rookkit and Ravenkit didn't understand why she wanted to be around stinky old herbs, and for once they were in agreement. Briarkit had bees in her brain.
She tried to make them understand why she chose that path. She'd never have a mate or kits, but her whole Clan would be her family. She would take care of them in ways only medicine cats could. Heal wounds, banish sickness, speak with their lost Clanmates... Every time one of them came close to understanding, the other would pull them back. When six moons rolled around, she gave up. She'd chosen her fate, and who cared if her littermates didn't understand or like it?Medicine Cat Apprentice
Briarpaw got her wish. She was made apprentice to Dewshade, the medicine cat at the time, while her littermates were made warrior apprentices. Sparrowtail was an intimidating cat. Not because of his size; he wasn't much bigger than a newly made warrior. It was his temper that made cats steer clear of him. He'd been trained as a warrior first before an accident forced him into being a medicine cat. His back leg was mangled. He never liked to talk about it, so Briarpaw had to hear the story second hand.
He'd been a newly made warrior on a high from finally getting his warrior name, and wandering the territory on his own when he'd heard a cry for help. A kit, not from the Clan, was trapped in the center of a group of boulders. Sparrowtail had gone to help, but one of the boulders he'd stepped on was wobbly and he fell, with it following after him. A hunting patrol nearby heard his screech of pain and found him with his leg crushed under the boulder. The kit had run away as soon as it was able to, and Dewshade was forced to either retire or become the medicine cat.
After hearing that story from an elder, Briarpaw's respect for the tom grew. She tried not to be as scatter-brained and actually listen when he spoke. This had been her wish, hadn't it? Just because he was grumpy didn't mean he wasn't worth listening to. Dewshade noticed her newfound determination and correctly guessed the reason for it.
The two formed a bond that actually amused a lot of cats. Briarpaw mellowed out Dewshade's temper when he was feeling bad and she actually grew to have a brain. They were fond of each other, that was for sure. If they hadn't been medicine cats, there was little doubt they would have become mates. But both were too loyal to their code to even consider it.
Briarpaw's relationship with her siblings didn't improve, but it didn't worsen either. When they argued, she was still the mediator between the two. That didn't say anything for their relationship with each other. They rarely came to blows over anything they fought over, though. The one time they did, both came to the medicine den with scratches all over. Dewshade later said the kits in ThunderClan could hear her angry screeching.
It was funny for the next two moons. Every time the pair saw Briarpaw approach them, they either scurried to hide behind someone or dropped whatever argument they were currently in and forced niceties to each other. Briarpaw took full advantage of it whenever she could, which was pretty much whenever she wasn't doing things for Dewshade and they weren't out training with their own mentors. When the trio were 12 moons old, they got their warrior names.
Rookpaw became Rookflight for his speed, how he seemed to almost fly across the land, and Ravenpaw was named Ravenmist. Briarpaw, despite her problems with the two, cheered louder than anyone at the time. It would take 10 more moons for her to get her medicine cat name, Briarheart.Medicine Cat
For seasons, she and Dewshade worked side by side to guide and heal the Clan. They had their spats and their laughs, like all mentors and apprentices. Though Briarheart was now a full medicine cat, she still acted like a kit sometimes. More than once, Dewshade had had warriors bring him random piles of herbs they'd found on the territory. There was a bit of panic the first few times about where Briarheart was, but when she came back to camp confused about the buzz, it was eventually dropped.
Life was good, up until she turned 28 moons old. A large force of RiverClan cats had been spotted coming towards the camp and WindClan went to meet it. Dewshade, at 50 moons, went with them to care for any wounds. Briarheart didn't really protest too much, sure that she'd see him again afterwards. It was against the warrior code to attack medicine cats, after all.
Either someone in RiverClan didn't recognize him until it was too late or they weren't all that fussed about angering StarClan. Dewshade was among the dead bodies. It hit Briarheart hard, but she wasn't the only one suffering. Friends lost friends, siblings lost siblings, and mates lost mates.
It was during this time that Briarheart's true skill as a medicine cat shined through. Though many died at the battle, no more died afterwards. She was able to patch everyone up and save her Clanmates. After moons of bickering about her decision, Rookflight and Ravenmist finally shut the hell up about her becoming a medicine cat and just chilled with it.

A cough interrupted the story. Briarheart flicked her ears guiltily when she remembered just why she was listening to the story in the first place. As cool as the story was, it wasn't nice of her to forget her job. The tabby she-cat bounced to her paws and meowed, "Oopsie, my bad! I forgot. I'll have Owlpaw bring over some tansy for that cough, and some juniper berries to help with your breathing." She waved her tail in a cheerful fair well before leaving and going to her den, where she found her apprentice bent over some herbs. "Howdy Owlpaw!" she chirped, passing by him and digging into the storage. When she spoke, her voice was slightly muffled from heading her head stuck in there. "Sorry, I lost track of time again. Boulderpelt was telling me this awesome story about a falcon. But he started coughing, and I remembered that I was supposed to be checking them over."
Briarheart exclaimed wordlessly in triumph at finally finding the herbs necessary. She withdrew two leaves of tansy and rolled three juniper berries out. The berries were slightly shriveled, but they still had some use to them. The medicine cat set them down in front of Owlpaw and meowed, "Here, take these to him and then come back. I'll show you how to tell which herbs are best for fevers and chills. Mkays?"
